Why LED Screens Need Controllers
An LED display system consists of the screen itself (modules assembled into cabinets), receiving cards inside each cabinet that drive the LEDs, a controller or media player that processes video signals, power supplies, and cabling. The receiving card translates data from the controller into the precise timing signals that light each LED at the correct brightness and color. The controller takes video from your source—a computer, camera, or media server—and converts it into the data stream the receiving cards expect, while managing resolution scaling, color correction, and multi-screen synchronization.
Synchronous vs Asynchronous Control
Synchronous control means the screen displays whatever is on the input in real time—every frame from your HDMI or SDI source is processed and sent to the screen with minimal delay. Use synchronous controllers (VX series, TU series with live input) when you need live camera feeds, presentation slides, or any content that changes unpredictably. Asynchronous control means the controller has storage and plays back pre-loaded content on a schedule, without needing a live computer connected. Use asynchronous media players (TB series) for advertising loops, menu boards, or any fixed playlist that updates weekly or monthly rather than second-by-second.

Asynchronous Media Players
The TB series covers entry-level players (TB1-4G, TB2) that decode 1080p content and mid-range units (TB3 through TB6) that handle 4K video with HDMI splicing. The newer TB50 and TB60 models add dual-mode operation—they can work as standalone asynchronous players or connect to an external source for synchronous use. All TB units run Android, accept content via USB or network upload, and support scheduling through the ViPlex Handy mobile app. Choose a TB model when your content updates weekly or less frequently and you want to eliminate the need for a permanently connected computer.
Video Wall Processors
The H series (H2, H5, H9, H15, H20) are modular video wall splicers built for multi-screen installations where several LED panels or projector-fed surfaces need to display a unified image or independently switched sources. These units use a slot-based architecture—you populate the chassis with input cards (HDMI, SDI, DVI, fiber), output cards (LED sending cards or additional video outputs), and optional preview or control cards. The H9 supports up to 26 million pixels at 144Hz, while the flagship H20 offers web-based centralized control and can manage dozens of screens from a single interface. Use H-series processors when you are building a video wall with more than four independent displays or need matrix switching between multiple sources and multiple screens.
Remote Management and Software
Novastar controllers ship with two mobile apps and desktop software for control and content management. VNNOX Care is a smartphone app that lets you scan a controller's QR code to see its current status, monitor temperature and network health, and receive fault alerts. ViPlex Handy is a content scheduling app—upload images and videos from your phone, build playlists, set playback schedules, and push updates to one or multiple screens. For laptop or desktop control, NovaLCT is the main configuration client (screen setup, pixel mapping, color calibration), and Unico provides centralized management of multiple controllers across sites, with both a desktop client and a web interface. VX and TU controllers also support wireless screen mirroring from Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices without additional dongles, making them convenient for meeting-room presentations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a video processor and a LED receiving card?
The receiving card is installed inside each LED cabinet and directly drives the LEDs—one cabinet typically has one or two receiving cards depending on its pixel count. The video processor (or controller) sits in your equipment rack or control room and is shared across the entire screen. It takes video input from your computer, camera, or media server and converts it into the Ethernet data packets that the receiving cards understand. The two devices work together: the processor handles scaling, color correction, and synchronization, while the receiving card handles the low-level LED refresh timing. You need both—the processor alone cannot light the screen, and the receiving card alone has no way to accept HDMI or SDI video.
Should I choose synchronous or asynchronous control?
Choose synchronous control (VX series, TU series with live input) if you need to display live camera feeds, presentation slides, software interfaces, or any content that changes in real time. The screen mirrors your input source frame by frame. Choose asynchronous control (TB series) if you are running fixed content—advertising videos, menu boards, event schedules—that you update weekly or monthly. Asynchronous players have built-in storage, play content on a schedule without needing a connected computer, and can be managed remotely via mobile app. If you occasionally need live input but mostly run scheduled content, the TB50 and TB60 support both modes.
How do I calculate the controller capacity I need?
First, determine your screen's total resolution in pixels—multiply the width by the height. For example, a screen that is 3840 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall has a total resolution of 4,147,200 pixels. Then find a controller whose maximum load exceeds that number. VX600 Pro supports 3.9 million pixels, so it would be undersized for a 4.1M screen—you would need VX1000 Pro (6.5M) or VX2000 Pro (13M). If your screen uses 10-bit color depth instead of 8-bit, the effective capacity of each network port drops, so check the controller's specifications for 10-bit load limits and confirm with your receiving card model. Always leave at least 10 percent headroom—if your screen is exactly 3.8M pixels, VX600 Pro at 3.9M is cutting it close; VX1000 Pro is a safer choice.
Do Novastar controllers support 4K input?
Yes. VX600 Pro, VX1000 Pro, and VX2000 Pro all have HDMI 2.0 inputs that accept 4K sources up to 3840×2160 at 60Hz (some models support 4K at even higher refresh rates—VX600 Pro handles 4K at 120Hz, and VX1000 Pro supports 4K with 12-bit color depth). VX2000 Pro adds DisplayPort 1.2 and 12G-SDI for broadcast-grade 4K workflows. TU4K Pro also accepts 4K input via its two HDMI 2.0 ports. Note that 4K input does not mean your LED screen will display native 4K resolution—that depends on the screen's physical pixel count. If your LED screen is 1920×1080, a 4K input will be downscaled to fit. The controller's 4K support is useful when your source device only outputs 4K or when you are feeding multiple screens and want to crop different regions from a 4K canvas.
Can I manage Novastar controllers remotely?
Yes, through VNNOX Care (monitoring and diagnostics) and ViPlex Handy (content scheduling and playback control). VNNOX Care shows you device status, temperature, network link health, and fault alerts—you can monitor multiple sites from one dashboard. ViPlex Handy lets you upload new content, build playlists, set playback schedules, and push updates to asynchronous players or TU-series units. For synchronous controllers (VX series), remote management typically means using Unico software over the network to adjust screen settings, switch presets, or update firmware—VNNOX Care can monitor these devices but cannot change their video settings remotely. If you need full remote control of video routing and color correction, deploy Unico in client-server mode and connect to your controllers over VPN or a dedicated management network.
